CULTIVATING AN ATTITUDE OF ABUNDANCE THROUGH GRATITUDE

“If only I had ____________ , I would be happy”…. The premise of “the grass is always greener on the other side”. Moments when we feel that we would be happier if only something different was happening. It doesn’t sit well when we are grasping, holding on, and moving through life with the attitude of scarcity — the attitude that there is not enough to go around or we’re not enough and need to have more to be better. We are narrowly focused on what’s not going right. These are times when we feel dissatisfied and small.

To live with an attitude of abundance, there is an expansive quality to it. We feel filled up instead of depleted. We feel generous and have much love to share. Recognizing that there is plenty to go around and that we are more than enough. We are content and at peace, even in moments when things are not going as planned. We are more present instead of lost in the past or obsessing over the future. When we operate from an abundance mindset, we have the capacity to widen the lens and see a broader view of the world around us — we see the pain but we can also see the beauty around us.

Abundance means “I have plenty” or “there’s enough to go around”.

Practice Gratitude to help cultivate an attitude of abundance rather than an attitude of scarcity

By engaging in gratitude practices, there is an emphasis on appreciating what already is. Helping to cultivate a spacious attitude of abundance rather than the diminishing attitude of scarcity.

Here are 6 gratitude practices to enhance and nurture an abundance attitude:

Journaling:

Write down 3-5 things that you are grateful for. Remember, even the smallest moments matter too. Make a commitment to write down what you are grateful for in the morning and perhaps at the end of the day.

If you are not one for journaling, that’s completely fine, perhaps you may prefer mentally saying to yourself the things you feel grateful for.

Showing Appreciation:

Let someone in your life know how much they mean to you or letting them know that you appreciated a kind act on their part. Even a simple, genuine “thank you” can move us towards an attitude of abundance.

For the moment we genuinely thank someone we aren’t focused on what someone isn’t doing or hasn’t done for us, but rather we have focused on the abundance already here.

Generosity:

When we are grateful for what we have, abundance flourishes.

When we are living with an attitude of abundance, we feel whole and are able to give generously to others. We don’t hoard our belongings, our time, or our knowledge; we freely give knowing full well that there is enough to go around.

Remember, giving doesn’t always mean that we have to give others physical items, often times giving of our time and love can mean so much more to others.

Meditative Phrases / Mantras:

Repeating meditative phrases throughout the day, can be a wonderful reminder that the quality of abundance already resides within us. It is the cloudiness of the scarcity mindset that can block our ability to connect to the abundance within.

Also, when we remember to come back to abundance through gratitude, fear and stuck energy have the opportunity to be released. For how can fear remain when abundance is present. Feel free to try the following meditative phrases:

Breathe in, Gratitude

Breathe out, Love

Or

I am grateful for…

Meditation:

When we meditate, we give ourselves the permission to access a spacious quality that is vast and limitless. How can scarcity mentality reside within us, when we are connected so deeply to infinite possibilities?

An abundance mindset provides us with the capacity for this. I have found for myself that a meditation practice can be a great way to enhance the attitude of abundance.

If this resonates for you, try a meditation practice that is focused on gratitude and/or abundance. You can chose a guided practice or do your own self-directed meditation. Or you can use the meditative phrases above as part of your meditation.

Movement / yoga postures:

Another practice for cultivating the mindset of abundance is through movement. My favourite movement practice includes yoga postures. I notice when I take part in yoga movement, I am truly connected to myself, to the abundance already here, and I move with a grateful heart.

If you are not into yoga postures, no problem. Find a movement practice that get you connected to the abundance within and the abundance all around you. It could be running, walking in nature, stretching. Even noticing the simple movement of breath while sitting or lying down can have an expansive, abundant quality to it.

Essentially, do what works for you!
